First, consider how you would like to add an item pack. Item packs can be created from scratch (see below), or duplicated from an existing pack (see Replicating an Item Pack for more information)
Item packs can also be added through the Item option when adding or changing an item by selecting the Packs command option. See Item for more information.
1. To add an Item Pack configuration from scratch, select the Item Pack option from the Item menu.
2. At the Item field, enter the item group for the item and then select the item from the Select An Item window.
If you are uncertain of the Item code, see Navigating Net Yield - Selecting an Item Code.
3. A Select A Pack or Pack Options window will appear. Select Add a Pack from the list.
4. A Select An Option window will appear:
If you are uncertain of the customer code, see Navigating Net Yield - Selecting a Customer ID Code.
Definition: A customer item pack can be assigned to a customer item alias in order to provide the exact pack description and nomenclature desired by a specific customer. If you are entering an order for that customer, the system will defer to that customer's available item packs. If it cannot find a customer item pack for that customer/item combination, it will use the default item pack for that item.
5. An Item Pack Definition window will display. Refer to Item Pack for a list of field definitions.
Let's use the following example for the next few steps: an item is "soda" and it is sold in cases of four 6-packs (boxes). Each 6-pack contains six 12-oz bottles. The item can be sold by the case or the 6-pack, but not by the bottle.
6. At the Pack UOM field, select the top most (outer most) unit of measure for the outer package. Press the F3 key to display a list of options. To stay within the rule of the UCC and EDI standards, you must only select from the three default types of outer pack descriptions allowed by the system: case, package, or each. According to UCC rules, "eaches" are the smallest item description and therefore cannot be sold in smaller units. In our soda example above, the outer most packing configuration would be the case since it can be sold by the box of six 12-oz bottles, as well as by the case.
7. At the Breaks in a Pack field enter the number of breaks or inner units that the outer unit may be broken into. For instance, our case of bottles made up in four 6-pack boxes would have four breaks – the four 6-packs themselves.
Note: Enter 1 if the case cannot be broken into smaller units.
8. At the Break UOM field, enter the unit of measure for the breaks. In our example, we define the break description as "boxes". So far, we have defined a case as containing four breaks of boxes. Use the F3 key to display options. Only the items units tagged as active in Pack Units will be available.
9. Enter the Pack Break Detail quantity, which is the number of units the break can be further subdivided into. In our case, this is number is 6, representing the six bottles. (Enter 0 if the break cannot be subdivided.)
10. At the Quantity, Break, or Detail field, enter the size of the break detail units. In our case, this would be twelve, representing the 12-oz bottles.
11. In the Quantity UOM field, assign a unit of measure to the Quantity, Break, or Detail. Use the F3 key to display options. Only the item units tagged as active in Item Packs will be available. In our case, this is OZ (ounces), representing the unit of measure for the 12-oz bottles, which is the break detail.
12. The system calculates the net weight of one of the breaks by the pound unit of weight measure. If one of the units of measure is not weight-based, manually enter the weight of the break unit.
The pack description of a CA of 4-6x12oz /BX, and the break description of BX of 6 x 12 OZ, will default based on the pack UOM, breaks and break UOM, the detail or unit quantity and UOM.
13. An optional twelve character alphanumeric code can be entered in the Alternate field to override the system pack description. This is only available for case or package UOM. An "each" pack UOM cannot be overridden. This description will then appear on your paperwork.
14. At the Order Increment field, enter the order increment (the smallest portion of the whole package that can be sold). The system default is "1" break unit. In our example, this would be one 6-pack. Therefore, the system will not allow you to sell single bottles.
Note: If you also wanted to sell by the single bottle, create another pack configuration that allows you to sell 6-packs with the bottle as the break unit.
15. At the Catch Weight Level field, enter FW for "Fixed Weight” (if the case is a fixed weight case), LI for “Order Line” (if the pack is a catch weight pack and the total weight shipped will be entered as the shipped weight in Shipping or Update Pick List), the Pack UOM (if the pack is a catch weight pack and the individual weight of each pack shipped will be entered as the shipped weight in Shipping or Update Pick List), or the Break UOM (if the pack is a catch weight pack and the individual weight of each break within the pack shipped will be entered as the shipped weight in Shipping or Update Pick List).
The Item Pack Catch Weight Level setting also controls how many lines are printed on the pick list. The Fixed Weight setting will print one line to record or confirm the total weight shipped; the Order Line setting will print one line to record or confirm the number of units shipped; the Pack UOM setting will print one line for each unit ordered; the Break UOM setting will print one line for each pack break unit ordered.
16. The Gross Weight is calculated based on the data used to build the pack definition, but the value can be overridden by data entry. This allows a true packaged gross weight (including the packaging, for example) to be entered for the item pack. The system does not use this value when calculating inventory, however. Instead, it uses the calculated weight of the product in the item pack.
17. (Optional) At the UPC field, enter a user assigned UPC code for the item pack. This code will appear on lists of the pack descriptions. Use caution in this field if you plan to assign the pack to multiple items later.
18. To enter orders for this item using slash-dot notation, enter S (S=Slash-Dot) at the Preferred Notation field. To enter orders for this item by decimal notation, enter D (D=Decimal) at this field.
When you have finished entering values into the Item Pack Definition screen command options will appear:
Select Add Pack to add the item pack.
19. "Add packs to additional items? No/Yes" will appear.
For more information on the Item Pack option see Item Pack.
